Last year the ceramic artist Meri Wells made a splendid horned creature intended for our garden. For too long he’s been standing rather wistfully gazing out at the view from the ‘Battery’ window-sill. With the likelihood of frost diminishing every day, we thought it would at last be safe to build and lime render a support for Meri’s Beast. In came Simon the builder to realise our ideas. The foundation was laid, the pedestal built and the slate top cut from a flagstone that once graced our barn. This morning Simon rendered the pedestal.
We think Meri’s Beast looks mighty fine, proprietorially surveying the lawn and the Ystwyth Valley beyond.
Simon had company while working because Basil took a very close interest in every stage of the construction.
Two iron bars cemented into the pedestal pass up through the hollow legs and help to secure the statue. It gets mighty windy in this spot!
