madonna del parto diary days four and five: detailing the environment

I hadn’t intended to have a detailed background/foreground in this composition, but the painting really has taken on a life… and a will… of its own.

The holly tree with the flying buttresses from our garden has made an appearance (it’s been seen previously in the backgrounds of  Green George and  Flight of Swallows but never before in fruit) and the rocky foreground inserted itself with nary a by-your-leave, probably because I love the meringue-like rocks often to be found in the landscapes of Renaissance paintings. I think that some plants or foliage  will shortly appear. And maybe some birds too. Or a bird.
