The painting is shortly to be unveiled at the Barber Institute, Birmingham. Afterwards I’ll post a full image of it here.

7 Responses to a sneak preview of ‘christ writes in the dust’…
Of many recent paintings, I could definitely see this one re”visioned” in dance. Whom shall we get to dance the roles, Clive? This would have been the perfect role for Lynn Seymour in her heyday… she had the perfect physical presence for it, didn’t she? But what of the male… does anyone come to mind for this fantasy ballet?

I think even “I” would like to be present for those auditions!!! LOL!
I wish that young musician I told you about [Benjamin Pates, the oud player] who has the goatee and “soul patch” like your Christ, was also a dancer. He’d be perfect for the role of Christ… alas. You know, I realize now that I was only half-joking about the idea of creating dances around some of your paintings. Wouldn’t it be wonderful? [I know you are cringing just now, but get over it!!!] A program of dances, based on certain of your paintings? Had this ever occurred to you? Things would certainly come full circle with that, wouldn’t they? I bet there would be grant monies out there for such a production!

Clive, have been driving through snowstorms for days! But today is home and catch up and take a peek at what you are doing–looking forward to seeing the whole thing! That negative space around the woman cuts very close to his head… Shall be interesting to see.

Seymour in her prime would indeed have been perfect. As for Christ… well, I think I’m just going to have to hold auditions for him! LOL!

Can’t wait to see it! That bit about him writing in the dust is one of the most mysterious and suggestive anecdotes in all the gospels.
Dave, I think I was very lucky to have got the commission for this particular story. It’s been a lovely text to explore.
