Favoured position, kneading my back gently with his paws.

This photo by Andrew Green, at whose dining-table Jack and I were sitting!

I don’t know how many men it takes to change a lightbulb, but I can tell you that it took three of us twenty minutes in ‘Aber Pets’ to fit Jack into the new harness that came without instructions. He sat patiently while the owner, his son and I all tried various configurations with increasing bewilderment. It’s all very snug and rather smart now the buckles have been adjusted to the smallest setting, but was a veritable I Q challenge to figure out. We began to wonder whether it was in fact a harness for something with a much more complicated anatomy than a quadruped. Possible an octopus! It all seems obvious now I know the trick, and it snaps on in a flash. But I think it’s going to be a long time before Jack loses the ‘oh-no-not-again’ expression he assumes every time I approach him with it!
