Arts Alive is a small though well-established charity working out of Crickhowell, that uses the medium of art within the community to examine and support issues of the environment, health and well-being. On the evening of Friday March 15th… the day before my weekend Masterclass at Arts Alive… there is to be a fund-raising for the organisation in the form of an auction of fine art at the Angel Hotel, Abergavenny. It is a ticketed event with wine and tapas.
The artwork that I’m donating to the Arts Alive fund-raising is the original collage I made as the cover-design of a collection of poems by Marly Youmans, The Foliate Head, published in 2012 by Stanza Poetry. The collage is presented in a grey-painted frame made of a deep tulipwood moulding manufactured to my design.

To be included with the framed collage is a copy of the book, illustrated throughout with black and white ‘foliate head’ images. The book has been signed by me, though not alas by Marly Youmans, who lives in Coopersville, New York.

oh that’s wonderful!! a lucky bidder indeed…. i love this new framing technique, also…
Well I hope there will be a bidder… or for that matter a few bidders in order to generate a little competitiveness… because this is a monumentally worthwhile cause. (I’m a great believer in small charities working within their communities to make a real difference, and I also believe in the power of art to transform lives.) I’m not at all sure I’ll have the courage to be there. In the past when I’ve attended auctions in which my work has appeared, I’ve found the anticipation and the process to be horribly uncomfortable. (Will it sell? Won’t it?) Best, I think, that I stay away.
I’m so glad you like the frame, Zoe. Together with my framer Anthony and the man who makes the moulding to my design, I feel we’ve really nailed it. Anthony reports that a number of artists have asked to have their work framed in this moulding, and he always replies ‘I’m afraid you can’t!’.
This Image made a great cover for The Foliate Head, it’s full of energy, but the frame you’ve designed for it really does it justice too Clive, a lesson in how important good framing is! A very generous gift to the charity auction, hope it brings in plenty of funds for Arts Alive
Thank you Phil. For the past ten years I’ve framed in a very limited range of simple mouldings, painted in various tones of neutral grey. This has ensured that in one-man exhibitions all the work on show has consistency of framing. But this is the first time I’ve commissioned a moulding to my design, and I was very careful with the measurements, so that the frames made from it look handsome on large, medium and small scale works. I’m really pleased with the results, and don’t want to use anything else now!
Arts Alive do a great job, and I’m more than happy to support their work in whatever ways I can.
